The story of Kartikeya's journey from north to south

In another story, at the behest of Ganesha, sage Gautam requested Shiva to divert the water of the river Ganga to the south as the river Ganga. As a result Godavari river came into existence. Kanyakumari is located on the south coast of India - a young woman who is seen waiting for her beloved husband Shiva in the hope that her adorable, self-appointed lord, Shiva, embodied in the grain of the universe, will come and marry her. But the gods prevent this from happening, because the sea cannot swallow this holy land as long as Kanyakumari remains a virgin. There are many such myths and details about how different types of rivers came into existence. However, the main question is why did Karthikeyan travel from north to south?
